June is Feet for Life Month and podiatrists up and down the country will be emphasising the importance of children’s foot care during Feet for Life Month. During the month, the Society is encouraging parents to take greater responsibility for the care of their child’s feet as good foot care during the early years of life and through the teenage years will benefit the health, wellbeing and mobility of a child through to old age. To mark Feet for life Month, the Society of Chiropodists and Podiatrists has created an advice booklet for parents, teachers and carers. A comprehensive guide, ‘Looking out for children’s feet’ covers basic foot facts, footwear, what a podiatrist does, problems associated with growth, problems associated with activities and nail and skin problems. There is information on what parents, teachers and children can do to help and practical suggestions on buying shoes. During the month, podiatrists throughout the country will be visiting schools, talking to mother and toddler groups, holding shopping centre exhibitions and information displays in NHS foot health units and GP practices. Gordon Watt, senior lecturer from Glasgow Caledonian University, who wrote the advice booklet, said, ‘Many parents are aware of common foot problems such as verrucae, but are less aware of the other, often serious, problems associated with growing feet. Greater awareness of the problems that can arise and when to seek treatment from a podiatrist will help to improve the foot heath of the younger population.’ As well as foot health literature, stickers, posters, erasers and colouring-in sheets have been produced featuring children’s character Professor Pod. Alison Hart from the SCP said, ‘Professor Pod helps to take the message of good foot care and podiatry to children in a fun way.’ DOWNLOAD YOUR FREE COPY To obtain a copy of the Feet for life Month pack, please download a copy of the PDF by clicking the link below.
