Diabetes may affect your feet in a number of ways. One of the early changes can be loss of sensation in your feet, often starting at the toes. This is known as peripheral neuropathy.
Professional advice is to always wear shoes that fit properly. When buying new shoes, get your feet measured.
On 23 September 2008 the Daily Mail reported on a special shoe which could prevent diabetic patients developing foot ulcers.
The Sureshoe has an insole that distributes body weight evenly through the foot as the person walks. First a mould is taken of the patient’s foot to reveal the pressure points. This is then scanned into a computer and a 3D model created to produce the shoe’s insole. The insole is then placed inside the shoe.
The shoe is being offered to patients at Newcastle Diabetes Service, a specialist NHS clinic based at Newcastle General Hospital. The shoes are available on the NHS and come in three styles, including a trainer.
