Press release by: SOCIETY OF CHIROPODISTS AND PODIATRISTS

Health unions representing healthcare scientists, health visitors, speech and language therapists, clinical psychologists, chaplains, mental health nurses, skilled support staff in maintenance and estates, midwives, physiotherapists, radiographers, chiropodists/Podiatrists, orthoptists, dieticians and clinical scientists have issued the following statement in response to a multi year pay offer for NHS staff:

“We would accept the NHS Pay Review Body’s recommendation of 2.75% on NHS staff pay for 2008/9 because of our commitment to the independent pay review body process. However the proposed offer of 2.4% and 2.25% for years 2 and 3 after the PRB recommendation gives us great cause for concern as the current uncertain economic situation leads us to believe that it would not meet our members expectations and would represent a real terms pay cut for our members.”

The following unions are signatories to this statement: UNITE; Royal College of Midwives, Chartered Society of Physiotherapy; Society of Radiographers; Society of Chiropodists and Podiatrists; British Orthoptic Society; British Dietetic Association; Federation of Clinical Scientists.

Commenting on behalf of the Society of Chiropodists and Podiatrists, Eddie Saville, Director, Employment Relations stated:

“This is a proposed agreement between the Government, UNISON and the RCN, our members have not had the opportunity to consider these proposals and therefore we are not party to this proposed agreement. Our initial thoughts are that it falls well short of our member’s expectations, and we would urge the Government to honour the independent Pay Review Body recommendation for a 2.75% increase for our members for 2008/09, and not link it to a multi year deal. Government interference in last year’s pay award caused our members great anger and interference this year is bound to have the same result.”
