Some 30 schoolchildren from Benhall St Mary’s School in Saxmundham spent a day at the UK’s first designated Footfunction Centre in Great Blakenham, to complete activities as part of the FootFUNction Challenge.
The project has been devised by those at RSScan’s Footfunction Centre to encourage children to learn about the importance of foot health and maintaining an active lifestyle.
It has already attracted a variety of other schools from across the county, who are completing on-going challenges throughout the term as part of their classroom activities.
The Benhall St Mary’s pupils listened to a talk about foot health from clinical manager Ian Sadler, before trialling the technology that is used at the facility to diagnose foot conditions in professional athletes.
Executive director, Danish-born Bente Smith-Rewse, said: “We are delighted to welcome schoolchildren to the centre to gain an understanding of foot health. The pupils were keen to ask questions about how our predictive technology works, and how we are able to produce ‘in-motion’ images of feet for athletes and medical patients alike.”
The school pupils will continue the FootFUNction Challenge back in the classroom, completing task sheets and experimenting with pedometers as a means of tracking their collective exercise levels.
“The challenge is a great way of getting young people to really think about their physical health and the daily exercise levels,” added Ms Smith-Rewse.
