Stemming the tide of diabetes

Diabetes correct coverType 2 diabetes is reaching epidemic proportions worldwide and in England 92% of the estimated 2.3 million strong diabetes population have the condition. The National Diabetes Support Team (NDST) has produced a new Factsheet for healthcare professionals, Preventing Diabetes, to highlight the main ways the risk of the condition can be reduced.

It looks at three key areas:

1. Diet – Obesity is a key indicator for Type 2 diabetes. The alarming rise in the numbers of children and young people with Type 2 is almost wholly attributable to obesity and physical inactivity. The Factsheet contains information about key government documents on improving diet.

2. Exercise – Physically active people have a 33-50% lower risk of developing Type 2 diabetes compared with inactive people. The Factsheet contains details about Local Exercise Action Pilots and Exercise Referral schemes.

3. Increased Risks – Type 2 diabetes is more common in deprived areas and among vulnerable communities, along with people from black and minority communities. This Factsheet includes information about giving better access to these communities.

NDST Director Bev Bookless said: “Never has it been more important to look at the causes of Type 2 diabetes, as numbers of people diagnosed with the condition increase every year. It can be prevented in two-thirds of the people who develop it and Preventing Diabetes demonstrates where attention needs to be focussed in order to achieve this.”
