While a woman is pregnant she will buy maternity clothes to fit her changing body shape but may neglect to think about new footwear! Celebrities such as Angelina Jolie and Natasha Kaplinsky have been photographed wearing high heels while pregnant…
Common foot problems during pregnancy
Heel pain
Towards the later stages of pregnancy, high heels may become more uncomfortable. When walking, heels repeatedly hit the ground with considerable force. When pain develops in the heel, it can be very disabling, making every step a problem, affecting posture.
Aching and swelling
During pregnancy poor circulation can lead to problems such as aching legs, swollen ankles and varicose veins.
Footwear advice:
- Avoid high heels because they put pressure on the ball of the foot, causing you to lean further back
- Avoid wearing completely flat shoes, such as flip flops
- Your shoes should support your feet
- The ideal footwear for pregnant women is a pair of good running shoes made from a breathable fabric
