RETURN TO WORK INFORMATION FOR PODIATRISTS IN THE UK

Introduction

The regulations for returning to practice are set out by the HPC.  Professionals who haven’t practised for over 2 years are required to undertake 30 days update of skills and knowledge and for a period of 5 years or more, 60 days update is required, before an application for HPC registration will be considered.

The Society has developed a system to support professionals throughout this period, beginning with "Associate (Mentored) Membership" and assistance in locating a mentor.

The period in which you undertake your required amount of update must take place within a year before applying for HPC registration, and can be any of the following:

  1. Clinical observation (supervised practice with a Society registered mentor)
  2. Formal Study (e.g. courses, e-learning courses, lectures etc)
  3. Private Study (e.g. article reading, research, CPD inserts, branch meetings, conference etc)
  4. All of the above

The only stipulation is that private study cannot make up more than half of your total days of updating. Continuing Professional Development (CPD) is now an integral part of HPC registration and we are here to provide members with the tools and support to ensure that they stay compliant with the Standards of CPD, as laid out by the HPC.  It is important to note that even after initial registration with the HPC, CPD will need to be as diverse as possible (i.e. a minimum of three different activity types) in order to stay compliant with the their standards of CPD and subsequently, conditions of registration.

Rejoining the Society

You will need to nominate a mentor and to assist in finding one, you may find some use from our current "Register of Mentors".  The register is the a result of a relatively new initiative and consists of volunteers who are willing to offer either clinical supervision or general guidance and advice, as well as details of schools and organisations that offer return to work programmes.

We are hoping that the register will grow and further develop over the next few months so that we can match members and mentors according to their regions. The information listed will be updated regularly, so we urge you to keep in touch with us for further developments.

To assist you in approaching local podiatry services or mangers requesting clinical supervision, please ask us for a copy of our "template request letter".

Once you become a member, you will be entitled to the following (just to name a few):

  1. CPD Information Pack
  2. Professional Portfolio for Podiatrists (template CPD record)
  3. The Society's Return to Work for Podiatrists Policy (to be read in conjunction with the HPC's RTW document)
  4. Information and assistance on Professional Conduct
  5. Monthly Journal
  6. Access to web site and e-learning courses
