Graduate employment rates vary but are generally excellent. Currently of those who want a job about 83% of students are employed within 6 months of graduation and 100% within the first year of graduation. This is excellent compared with many other graduate employment rates.
Employment opportunities within the profession of podiatry are very varied and exciting. The following is by no means an exhaustive list of potential areas for employment.
Flexibility
You may well end up working in more than one of the above areas. The profession of podiatry can offer the ultimate in flexible working. Both your career path and the hours you work can be flexible. This is particularly attractive to those with family commitments, for example. The degree of flexibility though does depend on the areas you chose to work in.
This work uses many of the clinical and assessment skills you are taught in training. Once you start work you will quickly develop moreconfidence and speed. You may work with foot care assistants who provide basic foot care and patient advice whilst you treat the more complex problems. This work is very varied and rewarding andeach clinic presents you with different pathologies to treat. It is anexcellent place to start straight after graduation.
Most podiatrists have some general practice work in their weekly rotas, but as time goes on they find areas of clinical practice they want to focus on for their future career development. The opportunity may arise for you to develop your skills in an area of clinical specialisation e.g. sports, children, diabetes etc.

How Much Could I Earn?
The nature of podiatric work means there is no definitive answer to this question, however the following may give you some idea of earning potential.
Starting salary within the NHS is comparable with that of other therapists including physiotherapy and occupational therapy, with a starting salary of approximately £19,500.00. This can range up to £90,000.00 for a consultant post. Many podiatrists who work in the NHS also run part-time private practices.
Within private practice your potential income is limited only by your geographical location, the kind of podiatry you practice, the nature of your patients' treatment and the hours you are prepared to work.
Working within education or medical sales will earn you a comparable wage.
