The Standards of Continuing Professional Development (CPD) were approved and implemented by the Health Professions Council in July 2005. CPD is now linked to continued HPC registration and it is therefore mandatory that all HPC registered health professionals undertake ongoing CPD.

The first audit took place in July 2008 during the registration renewal period, where 650 Chiropodists and Podiatrists where randomly selected to submit a profile and evidence for assessment.

The Society is here to assist members in meeting their Standards of CPD, and to provide information and support to those who require help in understanding the standards, have been selected for audit, or simply wish to find out more about CPD and the different services we offer or systems we have in place.

The HPC
Every time you renew your HPC registration, you are required to declare that you have, and will continue to meet their standards of CPD. The standards are as follows:

  1. Maintain a continuous, up-to-date and accurate record of your CPD activities
  2. Demonstrate that your CPD activities are a mixture of learning activities relevant to your current or future practice
  3. Seek to ensure that your CPD has contributed to the quality of your practice and service delivery
  4. Seek to ensure that your CPD benefits the service user
  5. Present a written profile containing evidence of your CPD upon request

In addition to ensuring that they stay compliant with the HPC standards of conduct, performance and ethics, all HPC registered professionals are responsible for ensuring they meet the above standards.

The Society
Although we regard CPD as mandatory for all members, there is no compulsory scheme, framework or system that you must abide by. However, for professionals who require some direction in undertaking and recording their CPD, the Society has a framework in place to assist members effectively. There is a continued link between CPD and third party indemnity cover meaning that any professional indemnity claim will be subject to the member demonstrating that they are up to date in all areas of their practice.

Enquiries regarding CPD can be directed to the CPD Officer (020 7234 8636 / db@scpod.org)
