Registration and abstract submission - Society Annual Conference 2009

Welcome to FEETFORLIFE.ORG

An initiative of The Society of Chiropodists & Podiatrists, the leading professional body for HPC registered chiropodists and podiatrists in the UK.

Feet for Life

The Society aims to raise awareness and acknowledge the contribution podiatry plays in helping to reduce complications associated with long term chronic medical conditions such as diabetes and vascular problems; conditions which have a high impact on patients' quality of life. Podiatry services help minimise the cost burden to the NHS and social services.

Diabetes is the theme for the 2009 Feet for Life Month and the campaign features foot health advice on caring for the diabetic foot.

Among the population as a whole, type 2 diabetes is on the rise: it is widely recognised that type 2 diabetes in children is becoming a global public health issue. However, many people are unaware of the many serious and costly complications affecting people with diabetes. These include heart disease, kidney failure, eye damage, and, of course, complications of the foot.

The podiatrist plays the primary healthcare role in prevention, detection and screening. Specialist poidatrists treat patients with complications relating to diabetes. People with diabetes are 25 times more likely to lose a leg than people without the condition. Throughout the world, up to 70% of all leg amputations happen to people with diabetes. The economic and psychological impact of limb loss is immense. In many cases, people can no longer provide for themselves or their families; they become dependent on the care and support of others, and often cannot maintain previous levels of social contact.

Just a few minutes each day can be enough to help prevent serious problems. 1) Check your feet. You're looking for any changes from yesterday as well as the previous days and weeks. 2) Wash your feet with warm water and mild soap daily. Check with your hand or elbow that the water is not too hot. 3) Moisturise. Apart from in-between the toes.
